Des Taylor’s August Angling Tips
Find them, feed them and then catch them
Having wrote about fishing for carp on the surface in my last tip I’m not going to forget that this month is also great fishing for carp on the bottom.
My go to bait is my own frankfurter boilie distributed by Willy worms although I do also have a soft spot for the sticky baits range my favourite being frozen Manilla in 15mm.
But although the bait and rigs are very important I think the way I bait up and feed is a little different to a lot of other carpers and it really does work for me on all waters I carp fish.
Find them, feed them and then catch them
Having selected my swim and where I am going to lay my traps before I do anything I put a couple of small handfuls of my pudding mix in by catapult or by hand depending on the distance I am fishing and then I put about 10 boilie in one at a time so I get 10 individual “plops” and so the boilies are spread around the swim rather than altogether in a tight spot.
Then I will start tackling up and every 10 minutes or so whilst I’m doing that I keep putting one or two boilies into the swim just to keep the “plops” sounding in the swim, that’s their dinner bell. This will take over an hour for me to prepare the swims sometimes longer.
Then I will bait a margin peg for about 6 hours without a rod in the area if I’m on a week’s fishing I may bait up this area for a few days before I put a bait in the swim maybe even longer but one things for sure the longer you bait and wait the more confident you will get a big fish to visit and feed in that spot.
Now I’m ready to cast or place my baits and again every hour I will put a couple of baits in the swim not a handful or not all together it’s important for me to have them spread around the swim and more important to get those individual “plops”. The amount of times I am sitting there without a take and after putting a couple of baits in I get a take almost immediately as though that “plop” has woke them up.
When I land a fish, I put another two small balls of pudding mix in again and start the same baiting programme as I have explained.
Just remember this tip there is not a carp fishery or a carp swim that does not benefit from having bait put in and no lines in the water.
