Des Taylor’s March Angling Tips

You May Even Catch a Monster Like This One…

This time of year, is always the most difficult to pick a species to try for because the winter species have passed their best and the weather is not quite warm enough for the true summer species so it’s a real ’in between period”.

But there is a species that will fit the bill and willing to feed well at this time of year and that’s rainbow trout.

At this time of year, I have great sport both on smaller waters and big reservoirs indeed fishing for this species on the fly is one of my favourite types of fishing throughout the year. I just love the close contact you have with the “tug” on the line when a rainbow takes the fly hence the saying “the tug is the drug”.

In most of our fishing we are seeing a float go under or a quiver tip go around or the vibration of the rod tip when a fish talks a lure but when you are using a fly line in your hand when that trout takes the feel is directly to the fingers and that is so exciting.

Sometimes the take can be at range after you have just cast out but sometimes the take is just as you are about to lift the fly out the water to recast and when hooked the trout will try and put as much distance between you and the fish as possible and very quickly!

The nice thing about trout fishing is very little preparation is needed for a box of flies, a rod and landing net and you are away for a days fishing, give it a go this year at a local trout water and if you are unsure about the casting book up a casting lesson which most fly fisheries will do sometimes even free of charge.

I promise you it will be fun and fill in that gap waiting for the summer fishing to start.
