Des Taylor’s April Angling Tips

Time to Hit the Big Waters

Every year at this time I make my way to the big reservoirs of England and Wales to sample yet again the fabulous Trout fishing these waters can give. My two favourites are Rutland Reservoir just outside of Stamford and Clywedog Reservoir up on the top end of the Severn.

Time to Hit the Big Waters.

Both these waters can be the most delightful water you have fished especially on a calm warm spring day but then they can be some of the wildest fishing weather wise you can endure and that can all be in one day!

But that to me is part of the adventure in angling being on a big water on the bank or in a boat. Sometimes when the fishing is hard and the weather is against you to catch in these conditions makes the day even more worthwhile.

But when the fish are on in these waters the fishing can be nothing short of spectacular and I have had in excess of 20 fish on both these waters in a day and in-between the fish landed there are the lost fish and the missed takes which makes for a very tired body come the end of the day.

Both waters have Osprey hunting the water the same time as you are out there and the surroundings are truly magical. Both are huge waters but both are stocked really well and a quick chat with the manger on the day will see you in an area where fish are willing to pull your string.

If you have not tried big water trouting I suggest you give it a go for you will not be disappointed and both waters have lovely pubs and restaurants nearby where you can recover after the days sport and perhaps even have another go the next day before you head off home.
