Des Taylor’s December Angling Tips
Ask Des!
Recently I have been asked the question “ my husband wants to take up fishing again not having done it since he was a child so I’m going to surprise him this Xmas with a fishing present to get him started again, but what do I buy and how much should I spend”.
Ask Des!
Well first of all what I would say is find a good well established local fishing tackle shop and pop in there probably a day in the week is better than a weekend when they will be busy with anglers buying bait etc.
Then tell the owner your husbands history in fishing i.e. is he a complete beginner or how much fishing did he do when he was younger.
Then I would say don’t buy too cheap because it will only mean that when he improves he will probably want to buy a whole new set again.
So, I would say buy a medium priced rod and reel but the rest buy top quality which will last for years. Terminal tackle like hooks and line and floats buy the very best and that goes for landing net poles and nets buy quality. The same with seats and tackle boxes because cheap will not last buying the best will be cheaper in the long run.
I suggest you buy tackle for a local commercial water where he will be able to easily catch fish which will get him used to catching and handling fish plus there will be other anglers there only to willing to give him tips and improve his skills.
Also, in the future to improve his skills and his enjoyment look online and find tuition lessons so few anglers do this but it is a sure way of improving his skills from having lessons from an expert.
I wish your husband a long and happy journey in this great sport of ours.
