A Good Start to the River Season

I’m hearing some good catch reports from around the country on the rivers with big chub and barbel falling to anglers putting the effort into get out there on the bank from all over the country.

A Good Start to the River Season

On a personal note I went barbeling on the Warwickshire Avon for two nights without a touch but on a brighter note had some great fishing in the day on the float with chub, roach and dace. I also had pike and Zander in the shallow water which were great fun on lighter rods than used in the winter.

The rivers are looking good with a little colour from the recent rain although even after a night of pouring rain on June 16th it made little difference to the height of the Avon as I think most of it just soaked into the dry earth.

A couple of things I noticed on the Avon was there were lots of small fish about, not this years fry but probably from last year and the year before which is great news for the future of the river.

Also, there seemed to be more insects about which is a great food source for the smaller fish plus it shows the river can sustain the natural food these fish need to survive.

I will be spending most of this month on the River Severn either with personal fishing or barbel guide days and looking at the forecast for the weather and river conditions I will be expecting a few fish to pull my string.
