Des Taylor’s June Angling Tips
Graylings – Not just for Winter
In the middle of June to be precise the 16th of June we have the traditional start to the coarse fishing river season and something for me that cannot come quick enough!
Although I love all forms of fishing I must admit there is something very special about sitting at a rivers edge or wading out in a river.
It was Roderick Haig Brown that wrote the famous book “A River Never Sleeps” and I often think about that title when looking at a river flowing past me and no matter the time of year or the time of day something different is happening on the river and that’s its fascination for me and the thing that brings me back time and time again.
Graylings – Not just for Winter
River fishing is still very wild fishing for me especially on the upper reaches of a river where you can catch one of my favourite river fish the Grayling.
Now lots of anglers will see this species as a winter quarry but be in no doubt the same as any other species Grayling will bite more freely in the summer months when the water temperatures are up. A crystal chubber float set just short of the depth of the river with two maggots on a 16 hook and a steady tickle of maggots going in the swim will see you catch one of these magical river fish.
Over the years I have been lucky enough to catch a number of these fish to well in excess of 3lbs and if I can give one tip today to catch a big Grayling it would be not to feed any loose offerings at the start of your session and first couple of casts just trot down with your baits on the hook.
For a monster grayling is a bully and will beat smaller grayling and trout to that bait and I have caught so many big grayling first cast its untrue and you increase your chances of catching a specimen if you don’t throw any bait in the swim at the start attracting a lot of smaller fish and other species like trout.
After a few trots if you haven’t caught a big one then feed normally and then move on to another swim eventually when you find a big one I bet it comes to that first cast!
