Des Taylor’s September Angling Tips

I simply love this time of year

This is a great time for all types of fishing whether that be coarse, game or sea all you need to do to enjoy this sport is get out there

Typically, a bit of rain starts to come in from the west making it warm rain and that will turn all species on and lots of southerly and south-westerly warm winds will be blowing across the land again getting all species to get their nose bags well and truly on!

Personally, at this time of year there is not enough days in the month for I will be hunting barbel and chub on my beloved River Severn, I’ll be casting a few lures about trying for a big perch, fishing overnight for a big bream and even getting a few days down the coast trying to land a monster Tuna or two if my back can hold out!

I simply love this time of year

All my gear is ready to go in my tackle room and it’s just a matter of preparing the bait, putting it in the car and I’m away. I’ll also be making plans for the early winter by when I’m tuna fishing I hope to catch a load of fresh mackerel to put in my freezer ready for a few pike sessions when the weather turns colder.

Another great favourite of mine at this time of year is the Grayling and although most anglers rate these as a winter fish only fishing for them when the frost and snow in on the ground I can tell you that the best grayling fishing of the year is now and all my 7 grayling over 3lbs have come between June and September, I’m talking about bait fishing with maggots if that is allowed on your water.

There’s something magical about the misty mornings as Autumn starts to get its grip on the climate and even the journey to the water can be inspiring with the heater on in the morning and turned off on the way home.

And don’t forget those big carp in your waters for this is the time that the big ones will start to show and feed heavily over baited areas, forget the single baits approach and put a bed of bait down, big fish eat a lot of pellets and boilies that’s for sure.

I would say I use more bait through September than any other month and that’s because those fish are feeding heavily, as I said at the beginning just get out there.
