Des Taylor’s October Blog

Autumn is not all about catching fish

Of course, catching fish is important to me any time of the year but Autumn has so many extra highlights to the anglers time on the bank.

For starters the scenery as the leaves turn many shades of brown and gold are one of nature’s miracle’s and sitting there with Autumn gold as the back drop is very special.

Those leaves will soon start to drop from the trees and with less foliage the wildlife of our countryside becomes more visual and birds and mammals can be more easily seen as you sit there fishing.

Autumn is not all about catching fish

One of my favourite sights and sounds of this time of year has to be the fallow deer because now is the “rutting” season where huge stag deer make their presence known as they claim their female prize.

Only the other morning I saw a magnificent stag stand proud in the field behind me and as I set up he made a deep grunt to announce its presence in the background. The ground is covered in fungi at the time of year and many is the time I have picked a mushroom to go with my bacon and egg breakfast on an overnight session, nothing like a freshly picked mushroom fried in the pan to start the day, just make sure you know what is edible and not.

Then there is something magical about the cobwebs on the back lawn when I look outside first thing in the morning as the dew highlights the patterns of the webs, yards and yards of web that such a small creature has created.

The temperature at night is starting to fall but some days at this time of year the sun can be so bright and powerful indeed feeling really warm after that chilly start and many is the time at this time of year I have to start stripping gear off that I had on to protect me from that chilly start, winter is not here yet. And have you noticed that there always seems to be a friendly robin appear in your swim at this time weather that be on a stillwater or river, many is the time I have missed a bite because I am feeding a robin with whatever bait or food I have for the day.

This time of year, also sees the start of the log burners being fired up at the local pub on the way home from a session or the wife will have put the heating on in the house to welcome you home just as the temperature starts to drop again outside.

As I said it’s a great time to be out there fishing so why not let us know what your favourite thing is about this time of year we would be interested to know.
