Des Taylor’s April Angling Tips
Don’t Leave It to the Last Minute
I know it seems a bit of a time yet for the start of the river season on the 16th June but believe me that time will fly.
Don’t Leave It to the Last Minute
I see and hear of so many anglers looking at their river kit they put away mid-March some a lot earlier literally a few days before their opening session.
There’s an old saying “fail to prepare then prepare to fail “ and that is so true in a lot of angling situations. Putting new line on your reels, oiling reels, checking the mice have not put a hole in your keepnet or landing net or the groundbait has not had a visit from vermin.
Check if you brolly is ok and not mouldy and holed, check your seat is working fine and sort all your accessories like hooks, weights, plummets and forceps etc and are all in the right place and in the right numbers, this should all be done NOW.
Also take a ride down to the swims you fancy for the start for its been a very wet winter with lots of flood conditions on all rivers so that peg you fished last year and plan to start this year may have changed a lot indeed it could have a fallen tree in there making it impossible to fish on the opening but its best to find out now than being bitterly disappointed on the day.

Also, I hear so many moans about the fish having to get used to the bait for the start because they have not seen any for months well why not pop down to the swims a few times before the start and start tricking bait in there NOW, that’s what I am doing already.
Think ahead and your catches will improve I promise.
