The 60-Second Angler Cover Check: Is Your Fishing Tackle Properly Insured?

One of the questions I’m asked most often as an insurance broker and angler is: “Does my home insurance cover my fishing tackle?”

Some policies may be adequate that’s correct, however, as a long standing insurance broker and Angler too I would suggest everyone doing this 60 second cover check because it’s not about whether your home insurance covers the kit, it’s where it covers it, and whether it does when you are using it?

So, if you’re relying on your home insurance to protect your fishing equipment, take a minute to answer these five questions:

1. What would it cost to replace all my fishing equipment today?

Don’t just count your rods and reels. Include everything you’d need to replace it at today’s prices, after a major loss.

2. Does my home insurance cover that full amount away from home?

Check your personal possessions or away-from-home cover. Most policies cover the kit at home but may have a much lower limit away from the home

3. Are there limits on individual items?

Higher-value rods, reels, bait boats and electronics may need particular attention. It could be that the policy has a single article limit which means certain items wouldn’t be covered to their full value.

4. How much am I covered for if my equipment is stolen from my vehicle?

Look for both the monetary limit and any security conditions. You might need to rely on your car insurance rather than the home when the kit is in your car or van, but then you need to check the limit it provides.

5. Is my fishing equipment covered while I’m actually using it?

Check whether your policy contains exclusions relating to sports equipment while it’s being used. This is a very common exclusion.

If you’re confident about the answers to all five questions, your existing home insurance may provide the protection you need.

If you’re not, it’s worth investigating further.

Specialist angling insurance vs home contents insurance

The advantage of specialist insurance isn’t simply that it has the word “angling” written on the policy.

It’s that the cover can be designed around the way anglers actually own, transport and use their equipment.

Fishing tackle doesn’t conveniently remain inside your home.

It travels with you.

It goes into your vehicle.

It sits beside you on the bank.

And, most importantly, it gets used.

That’s why comparing specialist angling insurance with home contents insurance shouldn’t simply be about asking:

“Does my home insurance cover fishing tackle?”

The better question is:

“Does my insurance cover the full value of my fishing tackle, in the places I actually take it?”

Before your next session, check.

You may discover that your home insurance provides everything you need.

Or you may discover a gap you’d rather know about now than after you’ve had to make a claim.
